XBOX 360

Most Memorable Graphical Jump
Winner: Gears of War
Released: Nov 2006 (US & PAL)
IGN AU Review Score: 9.5

Gears of War II may be the current king of visuals on the Xbox 360, but its relative impact in terms of graphics is far less than that of the original. Simply put, it was hard to believe just how incredible Gears of War looked when it first landed in our hands. This is yet another title that was leaps and bounds ahead of everything else at the time. It wasn't surprising, really. Epic, after all, knew the Unreal Engine 3 better than anyone else and really put it to work. The first thing that leapt out at you was the insane detail on all the character and enemy models in the game – they looked absolutely solid, with a weight to their movement, while all sorts of little visual flourishes helped flesh them out – veins in necks, scars on faces, layered armour and so on. The environments were similarly impressive – while we'd seen bigger landscapes, we'd never seen anything so detailed, from the dilapidated grandeur of the ruined cityscape to the moody tone of the underground caverns. The lighting was great too, and used to bring new elements to the gameplay... remember the whole night section? Step outside of that light and you're a fine red mist.

Winner: Assassin's Creed
Released: Nov 2007 (US & PAL)
IGN AU Review Score: 8.7

Assassin's Creed was a game where the player routinely moved from the chaotic hustle and bustle of ancient streets filled with people to perching atop cathedrals and other high structures, surveying the cities in their entirety. The fact that both perspectives were equally polished and impressive was a testament to the technical ability of the engine. There was plenty of artistry too, of course – Altair was incredibly graceful in his movements: pushing people aside as he moved through crowds; leaping with precision from beam to beam; and placing his feet and hands correctly as he ascended sheer surfaces. The other area may not have been so interesting, but for the spectacle of ancient cities and landscapes, this game was hugely impressive.

Winner: BioShock
Released: August 2007 (US & PAL)
IGN AU Review Score: 9.5

BioShock's world was easily one of the most distinct and interesting ever seen in videogames when it launched in late 2007. The faded glory of the art deco city of Rapture was made even more moody and atmospheric by virtue of its underwater setting, and everywhere the player turned there was both distinctive architecture and murky green water pressing in. And let's not forget the other denizens of Rapture, such as the Little Sisters and Big Daddies, who were instantly iconic in design, perfectly rounding out this dystopian nightmare.

Winner: The Golden Compass
Released: Nov 2007 (US), Dec 2007 (PAL)
IGN AU Review Score: 3.5

Loved the books, thought the film was okay, hated the game. That's a downward slope all too common in the games industry, and it's one we're getting sick of seeing. Putting aside the gameplay (given that this feature is all about graphics), we're fed up with licensed games being ported to every system under the sun, but no care being taken to optimise them for each - and we're not just talking about getting the most out the system, but ensuring they run well too. Take The Golden Compass on 360 – this is a game that simply doesn't take advantage of the hardware, with plain environments, average character models and awkward animations. With a heritage like Shiny's, this studio really should be able to do better than this.

Most Memorable Graphical Jump

Winner: Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
Released: Nov 2007 (US), Dec 2007 (PAL)
IGN AU Review Score: 8.9

Naughty Dog really knows how to make console hardware sing, a point it proved more emphatically than ever before with Uncharted. Forget catching up to 360 – this game eclipsed it. The recreation of tropical jungles was spectacular – the variety and intensity of the plant life, the dappled lighting, the way leaves were lit up on the underside when hit by direct sun. Not only that, but the character models were incredible. Protagonist Nathan Drake's face was hugely expressive and convincing, while his dirty clothes and stubbled face harked back to an Indiana Jones-style hero. There are so many visual highpoints in this game, but the one that really got us was the abandoned sub – the way Drake waded through with the water almost at waist height, placing his hands on the circular doorways as he moved from room to room. Such small touches, but so perfect, so real.

Winner: Killzone 2
Released: Feb 2009 (US & PAL)
IGN AU Review Score: 9.0

Killzone 2 may not feature the world's most progressive gameplay (that's not necessarily a bad thing of course), but this is a new high watermark for PS3 and for gaming in general. The most realistic faces yet, super-smooth animations on enemies, highly atmospheric environments that are detailed and well-lit and yet expansive and busy enough that you get the feeling of being in the middle of a large-scale conflict, plus very well-directed cutscenes that sweep smoothly into gameplay. Guerrilla Games worked on this title for a loooong time, and it shows.

Winner: Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
Released: June 2008 (US, JP & PAL)
IGN AU Review Score: 9.5

Metal Gear Solid 4 is a visual tour de force, as we've come to expect from every game in this series. Despite being set on the battlefield of the near future, with somewhat drab urban Middle Eastern towns and the like, Kojima finds countless ways to inject his own brand of style and character into the world. One only need check out the Gekko bipedal mechs in the game, and more importantly, the way they move, to see just how incredible MGS4's presentation is. And once again, the cutscenes took another huge step forward in terms of visual sophistication... and prominence, which – if you love Kojima's style – was heaven on a stick.

Winner: Sonic the Hedgehog
Released: Nov 2006 (US & PAL), Dec 2006 (JP)
IGN AU Review Score: 4.2

Looking at a still frame of this game you're probably like "Daaaamn! Worst visuals? What are they talking about?!" You obviously haven't seen this game running. Boy. There's a fair bit of artistry in the ol' Sonic the Hedgehog, but that simply doesn't matter when there's this much slowdown, this many frame rate hitches, this much character jittering, this much pop-in, this poor a camera and this many glitches. A complete rush-job and a woeful attempt to reboot the series. And when it came to 'next-gen', the PS3 version was particularly bad.

Most Memorable Graphical Jump

Winner: Super Mario Galaxy
Released: Nov 2007 (US, JP & PAL)
IGN AU Review Score: 9.7

The best game on Wii to date, Super Mario Galaxy was also a triumph in its presentation. This was a game so far ahead of the vast majority of titles on the system that it instantly made almost every other Wii game look amateurish. Like The Wind Waker, Super Mario Galaxy didn't concern itself with detailed textures, but instead went for a cartoony tone, with wonderfully shaded characters and environments in the bright, primary colouring you'd expect from a Mario game. Characters were particularly impressive - Bowser has never looked better.

Winner: Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
Released: Aug 2007 (US), Oct 2007 (PAL), Mar 2008 (JP)
IGN AU Review Score: 9.2

This game, like Super Mario Galaxy, did wonders for our perception of the capabilities of the Wii – it showed that it was capable of running a mature-looking, insanely pretty first person title. Metroid Prime 3: Corruption was technically very polished, running at 60fps in progressive scan 16:9 widescreen, but it was also a product of great artistry. The level geometry is always interesting, for instance, with towers and spires piercing the sky outside, while hallways curve away from the player within. Colour is used to create mood very deliberately, while the ornately patterned surfaces are just one aspect of the visuals that help build the mythology and history of the places you visit.

Winner: MadWorld
Released: March 2009 (US & PAL)
IGN AU Review Score: 9.0

MadWorld was a shoe-in for this category. Not only is it the most uniquely-presented game on the Wii, it's one of the most uniquely-presented games on any system right now. Its stark black and white visual style was a hell of a lot harder to achieve than you'd imagine – making sure the environment and objects were always readable and distinct for the player, and making sure that the world always looks interesting in black and white is no mean feat. Super stylish, with the constant bloodletting the perfect punctuation point on the rest of the presentation.

Winner: Target: Terror
Released: April 2008 (US)
IGN AU Review Score: 3.5

Target: Terror, eh? Apparently this game was first released in arcades in.... *does quick Wikipedia search*... 1798, but that wasn't enough for this Target: Terror mastermind, and it came to Wii last year to infect that system. Thankfully very few people noticed it amongst all the other shovelware cursing the Wii. What do you need to know? This was a game with visuals so bad it made Aerosmith's Revolution X look good. This was a game that sucked so heartily that the box actually came with the message: "Warning: playing this game can result in ocular bleeding." Of course, we put that warning on ourselves, but it was to protect the public. Badly digitised enemies in a shooting gallery? Count us out.

Acho que The Conduit e o "Novo Zelda" superarão Super Mario Galaxy em gráficos...pelo menos enquanto o próximo Mario não for lançado.
